The days are ticking down to Christmas 2020, and we are starting to get excited! It seems that the community is getting excited as well, as our website (www.rustygriswold.ca) and Facebook page have seen an increase in visits. The top three questions I have received in the past month are: Are you decorating your house this year? If so, when are you starting to decorate? Lastly, are there any new additions this year?
I am pleased to say that YES, we are decorating the house this year! I love coming home during the holiday season and seeing the glow emitted from my house. Weather permitting, I will start climbing ladders on the weekend of October 16. Most lights have been already tested and repaired from last year and are ready to go! Finally, indeed there are new additions for this year! I have added seven lollipops and an additional candy cane to add 909 light bulbs from last year. The new total is now 7,075 bulbs! In addition to the latest props and lights, two new songs have also been added to the playlist. They are Frosty The Snowman by Jimmy Durante and Snoopy VS The Red Baron by The Royal Guardsmen.
We had around 100 people show up last year for Night One. Due to the pandemic, I will not be advertising when Night One is this year. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and our website, as the hours will be updated when we FLIP THE SWITCH TO ON!
Stay safe, everyone.
A "sneak peek" at the prop being added to the show this year. There will be 7 new lollipops for a total of 861 lights between them!
Programming of the two new songs is now completed. Some polishing/clean-up is all that remains, but Frosty The Snowman and Snoopy VS The Red Baron will be ready to go for this year's show! Now the focus shifts to building new lollipop props, as well as repairs to lights/accessories from last year.
Very happy to see some shops and services begin to open in a somewhat restricted way. I've also been thrilled to receive supportive comments for my light show from people walking by over the past number of weeks. You know you have made a positive impact on the community when someone says, "Thank you for your light show" in June.
So with that being said, and with the economy in a somewhat recovery mode, I have decided to add 1,048 new lights to the show this year! It's an aggressive time-frame now to reprogram 10 songs to use the new bulbs for this years' show, but it will be worth it! Christmas 2020/21 will now boast 7,075 bulbs!
Roughly 6 months away now from turning the lights on, and with flurries in the forecast, it may feel a lot like Christmas this weekend! I still do not have a date in mind this year to begin the show. Should "social distancing" continue into November, I may not advertise a date this year either. I'm also contemplating music only via an FM radio, to discourage pedestrian traffic this year. Six months is a long time away, however. Safety for all viewers will be a top concern for me this year, though.
Work is underway in programming two new songs. Making its way onto the playlist for 2020 will be:
Frosty The Snowman - Jimmy Durante
Snoopy VS The Red Baron - The Royal Guardsman
This will bring the show up to a total of 10 songs, animated to lights! I'm also researching a method to accept donations for charity this year. Several people wanted to be able to contribute donations last year. I will see if I can come up with a non-intrusive and simple method to do so.
Stay safe everyone!
Before I get into my update, I’d like to acknowledge just how challenging the situation is that we find ourselves in. Concerns about keeping ourselves and our families safe and healthy, not to mention adjusting to the new norms around social distancing, is not easy. A sincere thank you to the medical professionals who selflessly fight against an invisible enemy. They are real heroes, and words cannot express how thankful we are! On to my update...
I have decided to forego any new props for the 2020 Christmas Light Show. COVID-19 has forced many manufacturers to concentrate on other priorities. As such, the availability of the components required has been impacted. Along with that, the cost for existing components has dramatically increased as well. At this time in April, I don't believe I would have enough time to purchase and assemble new props, along with program them in time to go-live mid-November. I will look to focus my time instead of repairs on my existing props and programming a couple of new songs to play on them instead.
I still intend to run the show this year, beginning in mid-November! As more things become certain, I will solidify a date in the weeks to follow.
Stay safe and stay at home!
With planning well underway over the past couple of months, a blueprint for Christmas 2020 is close to becoming finalized. At this stage in the display, the theme of a Gingerbread House is now permanent, for this and future years. Almost confirmed for this year will be the addition of six leaping arches for the front of the lawn, and seven animated lollipops at the front of the house. These 13 new props will add 1,053 new bulbs to the display! Once these new props are built and programmed, then we will begin looking at new music.
Also, a few astute "Christmas Light Enthusiasts" have noticed that a specific date for Night One has not yet been announced. While that is correct, I am targeting Friday, November 13, 2020. Once I have received the shipment of the new components for this years' display, only then can I confirm when the 6th Annual - Lock Up The Power Grid Christmas Light Extravaganza will begin.
Stay tuned for more information in the weeks to follow.
Last year was truly amazing and contained several "firsts." The largest display EVER at just over 6,000 bulbs. Winning a prize in the Burlington Christmas Light Contest. A TOUR BUS was making nightly stops for a week or two, and our display showing up on the 6:00 PM Evening News (thanks again CHCH)! Numerous new props were also added and animated with the Mega Tree music.
So how do you top that? Great question, good thing we have been thinking about "how" since the third week in December. YES, planning is already underway for the 2020 Light Show!
What's in store? Well, it's way too early to say for sure. One thing is certain however. There will be MORE LIGHTS, NEW SONGS, and NEW PROPS!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to view the lights. It put a smile on our faces to see so many people enjoying the display. Judging by all of the emails, Google reviews, Facebook comments, and return visitors, I think it's safe to say we did not disappoint.
